A Fresh Look at Miyuki Satin Silk Delicas: Why We Finally Added Them to Our Range

For years, we held off on adding Satin Silk Delicas to our collection. The hesitation came from experience: these beads were known for sharper edges and a tendency to fray or break thread more easily than standard Delicas. But as our mission to stock every available Delica color grew, it became clear that it was time to revisit these intriguing little beauties.

And we’re glad we did.

What Makes Satin Silk Delicas Different?

Miyuki Satin Silk (also called Silk Satin) Delicas share the same glass base and overall dimensions as traditional 11/0 Delicas, which means you can use them in any Delica‑based pattern without adjusting your design.

But their production process sets them apart.

During manufacturing, thousands of microscopic air bubbles are infused into the glass. These bubbles create a luminous, fibre‑optic glow—an effect often compared to cat’s‑eye beads. The result is a bead with a soft, satin sheen and a depth of color you simply won’t find in regular Delicas.

Because the heating process used to round the beads is shorter, Satin Silks tend to have slightly sharper, less polished edges. This is part of their charm, but it also means they require a gentler touch.

Tips for Working With Satin Silk Delicas

To keep your beadwork smooth and your thread intact:

• Pull your thread straight out of the bead—never at an angle.
• Add small round seed beads (size 15/0 or 11/0) along the edges of your beadwork to protect exposed thread.
• Use lighter tension, as the airy structure of these beads makes them more delicate.

• More fragile overall compared to standard Delicas
